President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he would not accept an invitation from Maryland Governor Wes Moore to join a “public safety walk” in Baltimore, citing ongoing concerns about crime in the city.
In a Truth Social post, Trump referred to a letter Moore sent him on Thursday, saying the invitation was delivered in a “nasty and provocative tone.”
“Governor Wes Moore of Maryland has asked, in a rather nasty and provocative tone, that I ‘walk the streets of Maryland’ with him,” Trump wrote.
“I assume he is talking about out of control, crime ridden, Baltimore? As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk.’”

Trump also warned that Baltimore could see a federal response similar to deployments made in other major cities earlier this year.
“If Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newscum did in L.A., I will send in the ‘troops,’ which is being done in nearby DC, and quickly clean up the Crime. After only one week, there is NO CRIME AND NO MURDER IN DC!” Trump stated.
“When it is like that in Baltimore, I will proudly ‘walk the streets’ with the failing, because of Crime, Governor of Maryland.”

Baltimore was recently ranked the fourth most dangerous city in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted Baltimore, along with Chicago and New York City, as Democratic-led cities struggling with crime rates.
Chicago is expected to be the next city where National Guard troops could be deployed, followed by New York.
Governor Moore, in his letter to Trump, pointed to declines in violent crime since taking office in 2023.
He said that homicides in Maryland are down 20% statewide, while the Baltimore Police Department reported a 22% decrease in homicides and a 19% decrease in non-fatal shootings during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
Trump, however, dismissed Moore’s claims of progress.
He accused the governor of having a “very bad” record on crime and suggested the figures Moore cited may have been manipulated.
The Department of Justice is currently investigating whether the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., altered crime statistics.
The inquiry was launched following allegations made by Trump and the city’s police union chairman.
Trump further questioned Moore’s military record, raising the issue of a Bronze Star controversy.

On a 2006 White House fellowship application, Moore stated that he had received the honor, though no Army records confirmed the award at the time.
After questions arose nearly two decades later, Moore received the Bronze Star in late 2024.

He has described the original claim as an “honest mistake,” explaining that he was informed he would be awarded the medal but did not actually receive it until last year.
The dispute between Trump and Moore underscores ongoing political battles over crime, public safety, and accountability in major U.S. cities.
Baltimore, which has faced criticism over crime rates for years, continues to be a focal point in the national debate over urban policy and law enforcement.
