Vice President J.D. Vance disclosed new details this week about a break from Washington tradition under former Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she declined his family’s request to see the vice president’s official residence before they moved in, as reported by Newsmax.
In an interview with Independent TV on Tuesday, Vance explained that in January, shortly after winning election alongside President Donald Trump, his family asked for an opportunity to visit the home at the Naval Observatory in northwest Washington, D.C.
The request, he said, was denied by Harris.

Vance said his wife had hoped to show their three young children the home where they would be living for the next four years. Without access to the property, the family found other ways to prepare the children for the move.
According to Vance, they showed the children old diagrams and photographs of the residence. He also mentioned that a friend from Cincinnati owned a book about the vice president’s residence, which they used to give the children a better sense of their future home.
Vance said that “is as close as they ever got” to seeing the property before moving in.

The official residence, which has served vice presidents since 1974, is a 150-year-old mansion set on 30 acres of private property.
Vance described it as a “very beautiful” home and said President Trump often jokes with him that it is a much nicer place to live than the White House.
“It feels like a real family home for us, which is really nice,” Vance said.
The vice president has not indicated whether he plans to continue the tradition of allowing his successor’s family to tour the home before moving in.
