A senior adviser currently serving in the Department of Justice was captured on police bodycam footage shouting inflammatory remarks at law enforcement officers during the January 6, 2021 protest at the U.S. Capitol, according to footage and transcripts introduced in court and obtained by NPR.

Jared Wise, a former FBI special agent and now a senior official in the DOJ’s Office of the Deputy Attorney General, was recorded yelling “Kill ’em! Kill ’em! Get ’em! Get ’em!” as protesters clashed with police outside the Capitol building.

Wise also referred to police officers on site as “Nazi” and “Gestapo,” according to video presented by federal prosecutors.

The footage, shared publicly by NPR reporter Tom Dreisbach, was introduced during Wise’s trial.

He had pleaded not guilty to charges of civil disorder, disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and aiding and abetting an assault on law enforcement officers.

Wise admitted in court that he made the statements, telling the court that his comments were made in anger after witnessing what he believed was police brutality.

“Those are terrible things to say. Of course. I shouldn’t say those things,” he testified.

“I think I was careless and used, like, terrible words when I was angry.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Taylor Fontan challenged Wise’s explanation during cross-examination.

“You yelled, ‘shame on you, shame on you?'” Fontan asked.

Wise responded, “I did.”

When asked if he meant what he said, Wise answered, “I assume yes.”

Fontan followed up, “And you meant ‘Kill ’em, kill ’em, kill ’em, get ’em, get ’em,’ right?”

“No,” Wise responded.

“I think that was just an angry reaction.”

Fontan pressed further, asking, “OK. So you meant it 10 seconds before and then all of a sudden you didn’t mean it, right?”

Wise replied, “No. I don’t think I meant kill ’em, I don’t want people to die.”

Wise, who served with the FBI from 2004 to 2017 in international counterterrorism and later as a supervisory special agent, did not physically attack officers during the protest.

He entered the Capitol building through a breached entrance, remained inside for roughly 10 minutes, then exited and stayed on the Capitol grounds for several hours.

He testified that his decision to enter the Capitol was “irrational” and acknowledged that “it was probably obvious” he was not allowed inside.

Wise’s defense team argued that his verbal remarks are protected under the First Amendment.

They also noted that there is no evidence suggesting his words incited violence or were heard by individuals involved in the physical confrontations.

“There is no evidence that anyone involved in the skirmish heard and was encouraged by his words, especially given the cacophony of noise at the time,” the defense stated.

At the time of the January 6 protest, Wise was working as a consultant in Bend, Oregon.

His current DOJ role involves advising on efforts to address what the department has described as the “weaponization” of law enforcement.

Following President Donald Trump’s return to office in January 2025, all pending federal charges related to the January 6, 2021 protest were dismissed, including those against Wise.

A Justice Department spokesperson told NPR, “Jared Wise is a valued member of the Justice Department and we appreciate his contributions to our team.”

Greg Rosen, who led the DOJ’s now-dismantled “Capitol Siege Section,” criticized the department’s decision to employ Wise.

“The Department of Justice could have hired anyone,” Rosen said.

“They chose someone who was alleged and credibly alleged to have participated in a riot, encouraging other rioters to kill police officers protecting the Capitol.”
