Melania Trump hosted a ceremony at the White House on Thursday to unveil a new U.S. Postal Service stamp honoring the late First Lady Barbara Bush, as reported by The New York Post.

The commemorative stamp, which features a portrait of Bush, was presented in the East Room with members of the Bush family and invited guests in attendance.

During the event, Melania Trump recognized Barbara Bush’s contributions to public life.

“While she is known for championing literacy, she also supported women’s empowerment, changed the national conversation on AIDS, and took a stand supporting gay rights,” said Trump in her remarks.

The ceremony included remarks from Dorothy “Doro” Bush Koch, Barbara Bush’s youngest child, who grew emotional while delivering a tribute to her mother on behalf of the Bush family.

Notably absent from the event were former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush. President Donald Trump also did not attend the ceremony.

While no official explanation was given for the absences, the Bush family’s relationship with President Trump has been strained since the 2016 Republican primary, when Trump clashed publicly with Jeb Bush, then the former governor of Florida and son of Barbara Bush.

Former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush, with son George W. Bush and other family members, are enjoying the performance on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Jan. 8, 1995, as they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

During the 2016 campaign, President Trump criticized both Jeb and George W. Bush. Regarding Jeb, Trump said, “I think Jeb is a nice person. But Jeb is not going to be a person who is going to make America great again.”

Speaking about George W. Bush, Trump said, “He just didn’t seem smart. Does that make sense to you? He didn’t seem smart. I’d watch him in interviews and I’d look at people and ask, ‘Do you think he understands the question?’ I mean, he didn’t seem like he had it.”

Despite past political tension, the ceremony proceeded without mention of those disputes.

Melania Trump praised Barbara Bush’s legacy, stating:

“I applaud Mrs. Bush’s mark defending our society’s vital need for women across all avenues, whether CEO or homemaker.”

Barbara Bush passed away on April 17, 2018, and her husband, former President George H. W. Bush, died months later on November 30, 2018. Born Barbara Pierce, she was a descendant of the 14th U.S. President, Franklin Pierce.
