President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he would “love” to run against former President Barack Obama in a hypothetical race for a third term.
The comment came during an appearance where Trump was signing executive orders at the White House.
In response to a reporter's question about the possibility of the Democratic Party nominating Obama to run for a third term, Trump appeared enthusiastic about the idea. “I would love that,” Trump said, adding, “Boy, I’d love that. That would be a good one. I’d like that.”
He also mentioned that people had been encouraging him to run but clarified that he hadn’t given much thought to the possibility.
Trump continued to discuss the topic, stating, “They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that,” while pointing to his accomplishments in his second administration.
NEW: TRUMP V. OBAMA?
REPORTER: “If you were allowed to run for a third term is there a thought that the Democrats could run Barack Obama?” TRUMP: “I’d love that. Ooo I’d love that. Boy that would be a good one. I’d like that.” pic.twitter.com/khWOFmayp0 — Autism Capital (@AutismCapital) March 31, 2025
The idea of a third term for a president is heavily constrained by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951.
The amendment limits presidents to two terms in office, with the only exception being Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served four terms before the amendment was passed.
While Trump’s comments sparked some curiosity, the prospect of him running for a third term would be an uphill battle.
Any attempt to reverse the 22nd Amendment would require a significant political effort to gain enough votes to pass a constitutional amendment.
This would likely face opposition, not only from Democrats but possibly from some Republicans as well.
In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump emphasized that he was not joking about the possibility of a third term, adding that there are “methods” to go about it.
Trump is just toying with the media lol
“I have had more people ask me to have a 3rd term, which in a way is a 4th term because the 2020 election was totally rigged, so it's actually sort of a 4th term. I just don't want the credit for the 2nd because Biden was so bad.” pic.twitter.com/UtI0SMtHy8 — johnny maga (@_johnnymaga) March 31, 2025
However, he stopped short of delving into specifics, opting to focus on the present and his current efforts as president.
Despite speculation over his interest in a third term, the relationship between Trump and Obama appears to remain cordial.
As of January, the two were seen engaging in friendly conversation and laughter during the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, a moment that went viral on social media.
Trump’s remarks about potentially running for a third term came amid ongoing discussions about the future of the Republican Party and his political legacy.
While some continue to speculate about his next steps, including a potential re-election bid in 2028, his comments on a third term remain an intriguing and unlikely proposition given the constitutional limitations.
