Texas Governor Greg Abbott has fired back at Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett after she mocked his use of a wheelchair at a recent event.

Crockett’s remarks, which came at a Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Los Angeles on Monday, sparked backlash as she referred to Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels.”

The comment quickly garnered criticism, with many accusing Crockett of crossing a line in attacking Abbott’s disability.

Abbott, who has been confined to a wheelchair since 1984 following a freak accident where a tree fell on his back, addressed the jibe during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” late Tuesday.

Former president Donald Trump arrives in Eagle Pass, Texas at Shelby Park on Feb. 29, 2024, where Texas Governor Greg Abbott greeted him.

The governor took the opportunity to respond, dismissing Crockett’s insult as part of a broader pattern of negative rhetoric from the Democratic Party.

“It’s another day and another disaster by the Democrats. The reality is they have no vision, no policy. They have nothing to sell but hate, and Americans are not buying it,” Abbott told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“It’s one reason why Texas is going to remain red.”

Abbott’s remarks came as part of a broader response to the growing polarization and increasingly aggressive political rhetoric in Washington, particularly from Democratic lawmakers.

In the wake of the controversy, Crockett defended her comment, claiming it was not aimed at Abbott’s disability.

Instead, she suggested her remarks were focused on Abbott’s policies, particularly his decisions regarding the transportation of migrants.

“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition — I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors,” Crockett stated in a post on the social media platform X.

She added, “Keep that same energy for all people, not just your political adversaries.”

Despite Crockett’s defense, many observers remained unconvinced, arguing that her comment crossed a line by making light of Abbott’s disability.

Abbott’s spokesperson also condemned the remarks, calling them “disrespectful” and “unfortunate.” The backlash from the public has only added fuel to the already heated political climate in the state.

This latest exchange is just one in a series of increasingly charged political disputes between Republican leaders and Democratic lawmakers.

While Abbott’s response emphasizes the lack of a clear policy vision from Democrats, Crockett’s defense focuses on her criticism of Abbott’s handling of the migrant crisis and its impact on local communities.

The war of words between Abbott and Crockett highlights the growing divide within American politics, with both sides sharpening their rhetoric in a bid to gain public support.

As Texas continues to be a political battleground, Abbott’s remarks on “Hannity” reinforced his commitment to conservative values and policies, asserting that the state will remain firmly in the Republican column in the upcoming elections.

With tensions continuing to rise, both Abbott and Crockett are likely to face further scrutiny in the coming weeks, as their respective political strategies and personal attacks continue to dominate headlines.
