Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is facing scrutiny after making a speech in Boston, where he called for a "revolution" against President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Speaking outside in the snow, Markey invoked historical revolutions while rallying a crowd against what he described as the threat of authoritarianism.

During his speech, Markey referenced Massachusetts' history of revolutions, tying his call to action to past movements such as the American Revolution, abolitionism, and the suffragette movement.

"Massachusetts is where revolutions are born," Markey began. "And the revolution against Donald Trump and Elon Musk starts here."

He continued by drawing parallels between past revolutionary struggles and his opposition to Trump:

"This is the city of revolutionaries from the American Revolution to create checks and balances in the United States Constitution so that we did not have a dictator—a king—the way those colonists were living under it. And they fought all along Massachusetts Avenue. All coming out, the men and women to say, 'no taxation without representation.' We want to have a balance, we cannot have a king."

Markey later expanded on his remarks, listing various historical movements that he claimed had their roots in Massachusetts.

"The American Revolution started here. The revolution of abolitionism started here. The revolution of the suffragette movement started here. The revolution of same-sex marriage started here. The revolution against civil war in Vietnam started here. The revolution against Donald Trump and Elon Musk, it starts here," he declared.

Markey’s comments quickly drew attention online, particularly for his use of the term "revolution", which he later pinned to his X profile.

Some questioned whether his rhetoric could be interpreted as incitement, particularly in light of past accusations against Trump for allegedly encouraging unrest.

The crowd at Markey’s event cheered in support, with many waving progressive flags and signs. Some displayed slogans such as “SAY NO TO HATE”, while others carried signs reading “NO KINGS” and “NO FASCIST USA”.

Markey’s speech comes amid years of accusations from Democrats that Trump incited violence, particularly in relation to his speech on January 6, 2021.
