TV host and comedian Bill Maher took aim at the NFL’s long-running ‘End Racism’ campaign, calling it “stupid” during an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.

The league’s decision to remove the slogan from the Super Bowl LIX end zones has sparked debate, as this will be the first time in four years that the message will not appear on the field.

Instead of ‘End Racism,’ the end zones at Allegiant Stadium in New Orleans will display ‘Choose Love’ and ‘It Takes All Of Us’ for the championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Discussing the change on his show, Maher remarked that the decision was influenced by the Trump administration, which he claimed pressured the NFL to remove the message.

“I noticed that at the Super Bowl, they’re, for the first time in, I think, four years now, the Trump administration is making them take away ‘End Racism,’ which they had written in the end zone,” Maher said.

His guest, Tara Palmeri, questioned the removal, calling it “silly” and asking, “Why get rid of it?”

Maher responded bluntly:

“Oh, I could tell you why. Because it was stupid to begin with. But let me ask you, who is it for? And if you’re a racist and you see ‘End Racism’ in the end zone, you’re gonna stop being a racist?”

Palmeri pushed back, saying the slogan’s intention was simply to promote kindness, arguing, “The sentiment is basically like, don’t be an asshole.”

Maher countered, calling it a pointless distraction from the game.

“But I think it’s an asshole move to nag us during a football game about something that doesn’t change anything. If I’m not a racist and I see it, it doesn’t matter. And if I am a racist, it’s gonna make me more of a racist.”

Maher’s comments quickly gained traction on social media, with many fans expressing agreement.

One user wrote, “The only point is to virtue signal. That’s all.”

Another added, “I’ve been saying this for years. The NFL is actually promoting racism and division. It is very hard to watch. Sad really, because the NFL is one place where merit is the only way to get a starting role, regardless of what color your skin is. Talk about dropping the ball…”

The NFL first introduced the ‘End Racism’ campaign in 2020, following nationwide protests. The slogan has been featured in stadiums, end zones, and helmets over the past four seasons.

The NFL’s decision to remove the slogan comes as President Donald Trump prepares to attend Super Bowl LIX, making him the first sitting president in history to do so.

Trump’s attendance is expected to be a focal point during the game, which will see Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

The Chiefs, led by head coach Andy Reid, have won back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024 and will face the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on Sunday evening.

With Trump in attendance and the league’s shift away from certain messaging campaigns, Super Bowl LIX is shaping up to be a game with significant on-field and off-field storylines.
