The decision marks a significant shift in Argentina’s approach to global health governance and aligns with the administration’s stance on national sovereignty.
Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni cited “profound differences in health management” as the primary reason for the withdrawal.

Speaking at a news conference, Adorni emphasized that Argentina’s departure was specifically due to the W.H.O.’s handling of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, which he described as inadequate.

Argentina’s decision to leave the W.H.O. follows a similar move by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order to withdraw from the agency during his time in office.

Of all the Executive Orders he signed today, I consider this one of the most important.

The Associated Press reported that another country leaving the W.H.O. “will further fracture cooperation in global health.”
Adorni made it clear that Argentina would not allow international organizations to interfere with the country’s governance, particularly in matters of health policy.
“We will not allow an international organization to intervene in Argentina’s sovereignty,” Adorni said.
President Milei’s office released a statement accusing the W.H.O. of failing its “greatest test” by promoting lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic without sufficient scientific backing.

The statement, as reported by USA Today, highlights Milei’s longstanding criticism of the agency’s pandemic response.
Milei has frequently positioned himself against globalist institutions, a stance he reinforced during his address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland this past January.
During his speech, Milei condemned what he called “woke ideology,” warning against policies that he argued weaken national economies and personal freedoms.

Since taking office, Milei has implemented significant economic reforms, including the elimination of a 30 percent tax on foreign currency debit and credit card purchases.
His administration has also announced plans for a sweeping 90 percent tax reduction as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth.
Milei’s alignment with conservative political movements has been evident through his international engagements.
In December 2024, he addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), urging conservatives to engage in a “cultural battle” against leftism.
He also attended former President Trump’s inauguration in January, further strengthening ties with conservative leaders worldwide.
Argentina’s withdrawal from the W.H.O. signals a broader shift in its foreign policy approach, reflecting Milei’s emphasis on national sovereignty and a rejection of global institutions that he perceives as overreaching.
