In a bold cabinet move, President-elect Donald Trump has tapped former New York congressman Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Known for his commitment to conservative policies and pragmatic solutions, Zeldin, 44, comes with a robust record from his time representing Long Island and his fierce run for New York governor in 2022. Zeldin’s appointment marks the second New Yorker in Trump’s administration, following Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination as UN ambassador.

As reported by The New York Post, Zeldin expressed enthusiasm for the role, outlining his vision for an empowered and competitive American economy.

“I am deeply honored to have been asked by President Trump to serve in his Cabinet. As EPA Administrator, we will restore American energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs, make the United States the global leader of Artificial Intelligence advancement, and slash the red tape holding back American workers from upward economic mobility,” he told The Post.

He underscored his commitment to safeguarding the environment while ensuring that “access to clean air and water” remains a priority.

Trump echoed confidence in Zeldin’s ability to advance America First principles within the EPA.

“Lee, with a very strong legal background, has been a true fighter for America First policies. He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,”  Trump stated.

Trump also pointed to Zeldin’s history of handling complex environmental challenges, noting his past work on issues affecting Long Island, like combating potentially harmful dredge waste. Trump commented, “I have known Lee Zeldin for a long time and have watched him handle, brilliantly, some extremely difficult and complex situations. I am very proud to have him in the Trump Administration, where he will quickly prove to be a great contributor!”

With Stefanik already set to serve as UN ambassador, the addition of Zeldin strengthens Trump’s cabinet with another seasoned New Yorker known for his steadfast loyalty and advocacy for conservative values. Both Zeldin and Stefanik played critical roles on Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment, further solidifying their places within the administration.

Zeldin is expected to drive Trump’s agenda forward, focusing on empowering American industries without compromising essential environmental safeguards. His pragmatic stance on environmental issues, particularly those impacting New Yorkers, may even draw a less hostile reception from some Democrats compared to other conservative nominees.
