MSNBC host and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has pulled back the curtain on the Democratic Party’s flawed strategy in the latest election.
Reflecting on Tuesday’s results that saw Republicans reclaim both the White House and the Senate, Psaki took to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to share her candid analysis on why Democrats fell short with key voter demographics, as reported by Fox News.
Psaki acknowledged that Democrats placed too much focus on courting “never-Trump” Republicans while failing to engage disaffected Democrats, a move she suggested was a fundamental miscalculation.

“In my view, there was an over-listening to, and an over-lifting up of people who left Trump, not people who left the Democratic Party,” Psaki stated. This overemphasis, she implied, missed the mark with many voters who felt alienated by the Democrats’ messaging and approach.
In her assessment, Psaki pointed out that Democrats “misread” the importance of certain issues for the American public, particularly abortion, which, contrary to their expectations, didn’t hold the sway they’d hoped among voters.
She urged her party to “be sober about” the reality that traditional Democrat supporters didn’t rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris as anticipated.
“There’s sexism, there’s racism, all of that is true,” Psaki said, but she also called for Democrats to reconsider “who people are listening to.” In her view, those who had previously left the Democratic Party—not those who had defected from Trump—would be crucial to building a winning coalition.
Psaki also suggested that Democrats’ closing messages on Trump’s threat to democracy and warnings of fascism may have alienated more voters than it inspired.
“The last thing I’ll say, because I’ve been thinking about this a lot, is the part of that piece, the who you’re listening to, is also this argument — you just touched on this, Mika — about fascism. Fascism and the threat of democracy is a huge issue in this country. It’s one that should be talked about. Journalists should talk about it. People should dig into it. It is not a good closing message to reach the masses of the country. People don’t relate to it. It’s not understandable and I hope that is a lesson,” she remarked.
In the aftermath, many Democrats and media figures have pointed fingers, attributing Vice President Harris’s loss to various factors including alleged racism, sexism, and even misinformation.
According to a Fox News Voter Analysis, President-elect Trump made significant gains with Black, Hispanic, and young voters, while Harris lost ground compared to Biden’s performance in 2020. For instance, young voters supported Harris by just an 8-point margin, a steep drop from Biden’s 16-point lead four years earlier.

Harris also struggled to capture the support of women and Black voters to the same extent, with 88% of Black voters backing her versus Biden’s 94%.
