NBC’s National Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki analyzed President-elect Donald Trump’s significant strides in attracting a “more diverse” Republican coalition, which contributed to his victory over Kamala Harris in last week’s election.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, Kornacki highlighted Trump’s gains among Hispanic, Black, young, and lower-income voters, noting a remarkable transformation in the party’s demographics since Trump entered the political stage.
Kornacki detailed Trump’s impact on diversifying Republican support, saying, “He did it by transforming the Republican Party. It is now more diverse than it’s ever been in modern times, certainly much more than when Donald Trump first came on the scene eight years ago.”

Kornacki explained that before Trump, the Republican Party struggled among younger voters and low-income individuals. “Pre-Trump voters under 30 were going for the Democrats by 23 points. Folks with incomes under $50,000, 22 points for the Democrats, and folks without college degrees, four points for the Democrats—that’s pre-Trump,” he stated.
In the 2024 election, these trends shifted sharply, with Kornacki noting that young voter support for Democrats was “cut more than in half,” while voters earning under $50,000 and those without college degrees increasingly leaned Republican.
Kornacki also pointed to notable demographic changes, explaining, “The Black vote is still overwhelmingly Democratic, but that’s a 15-point shift, down from 87 points for the Democrats to 72. Hispanic voters, now basically a toss-up constituency, and Asian-Americans also saw a 32-point shift.”
Kornacki described these shifts as integral to the “new coalition” Trump assembled, underscoring the expanded appeal Trump brought to the Republican Party.
While Harris gained some Hispanic support in the final weeks before the election, Kornacki noted that her numbers still trailed behind those of Joe Biden in 2020. Kornacki attributed this disparity to Trump’s appeal across a diverse voter base, especially in traditionally blue states, where he closed the gap with Democrats.
“Big, blue states with very diverse populations. This new coalition that Donald Trump’s assembled, it meant he didn’t win any of these, but he made some giant strides,” Kornacki said, noting that Trump significantly narrowed margins in states like California and Illinois.
These gains, he added, ultimately contributed to Trump winning the popular vote.

As the 2024 election results stand, Republicans have expanded their influence in Congress, picking up four Senate seats and maintaining their hold on the House of Representatives, with analysts favoring them to retain control.
This expanded Republican coalition, fortified by Trump’s outreach to more diverse groups, has redefined the GOP’s voter base, signaling a new direction for the party under his leadership.
