On the first day of early voting in North Carolina, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz took his campaign to Durham, bringing a personal anecdote to the forefront during his rally.
Walz made a point of discussing his mother’s reliance on Social Security to make ends meet, as reported by Fox News.

Walz told the crowd that his mother counts on her Social Security check each month just to get by, saying, “When my mom looks for that Social Security deposit to be made in her bank account, that’s how she’s going to feed herself. That’s how she’s going to get things done.”

He framed this as a stark contrast to former President Donald Trump and what Walz referred to as Trump’s “rich friends,” claiming they never have to worry about Social Security at all.
Walz hits the trail in NC with a personal story – says his mom waits for her Social Security check to feed herself.
Yet, Forbes pegs his net worth at over $1 million.

Walz himself has an estimated net worth of over $1 million, a detail that may raise some eyebrows given his comments about the struggles of his mother.
Nonetheless, Walz has spent much of his career in public service. A former public school teacher and Army National Guardsman, Walz served six terms in Congress before becoming Minnesota’s governor in 2019.
Walz didn’t shy away from taking shots at Trump, stating, “He [Trump] doesn’t give a damn if his Social Security check comes or not.”

He also highlighted what he sees as economic unfairness under Trump’s policies. Walz assured voters that a Harris administration would mean tax relief for a hundred million Americans, particularly those in the middle class.
He even pointed out that as governor, he passed the largest tax cut in Minnesota’s history, one that he claims benefited the middle class rather than the wealthy.
Walz’s appearance in Durham wasn’t his first visit to the state during this campaign. Alongside former President Bill Clinton, he plans to continue his push with another rally in Winston-Salem.
Despite a somewhat slow start to media appearances, Walz has ramped up his efforts recently, joining “Fox News Sunday” for the second consecutive week and sitting down with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.
He has also spoken to local news stations in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
As Walz and Harris work to close the gap with their Republican counterparts, the focus remains on issues like Social Security and middle-class tax relief—both of which Walz emphasizes are central to their platform.
