Data reveals a 30 percent decline in California’s job openings, and the state now holds the second-highest unemployment rate in the nation.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signs the fast food bill AB1228 in Los Angeles, on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023. California’s fast food workers will have a minimum wage of $20 per hour next year under a new law.

Bateman didn’t mince words, posting to her 139,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter): “Newsom is the worst Governor we’ve ever had in Calif.”

Bateman’s recent comments reflect her longstanding opposition to Newsom’s leadership.

Back in 2020, she was seen supporting the movement to recall him from office. According to images obtained by the Daily Mail, Bateman participated in a “Recall Gavin 2020” campaign event, where she signed a petition seeking to remove the governor. “OK, how do we get rid of this guy? Where do I sign?” she reportedly asked upon arrival at the campaign trailer. Bateman took additional signature forms with her, aiming to gather more support for the campaign.

Speaking to volunteers, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much for being here. Let’s do this!”

Recently, Bateman has criticized Newsom’s efforts to address the state’s financial challenges, particularly his handling of the entertainment industry’s economic downturn.

As Newsom unveiled a new tax credit initiative designed to attract film and television production back to California, Bateman voiced her skepticism online, calling his rhetoric “deflection” and adding, “PhD in deflection and word salad composition from Word Salad College.”

Newsom’s new tax credit program, launched with the aim of revitalizing Hollywood, is part of a broader effort to counter the exodus of film production from California to other states offering similar incentives.

In a press statement, Newsom defended the program, emphasizing California’s significance as a global entertainment hub. “California is the entertainment capital of the world, rooted in decades of creativity, innovation, and unparalleled talent,” he said.

Newsom underscored that expanding this program is intended to keep production in California, boost job creation, and strengthen local economies by maintaining the connection between communities and the state’s entertainment industry.

Despite Newsom’s optimism, recent industry reports suggest that California’s entertainment sector is in decline.

A study from FilmLA reported a 5 percent drop in film and television production in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, a troubling sign for Hollywood’s future in the state.

Industry publication The Hollywood Reporter recently described Los Angeles as a “production graveyard,” noting, “Every category of filming for scripted content trails historical norms.”

The state’s economic woes extend beyond Hollywood, as evidenced by the 30 percent reduction in job openings statewide.

This significant decrease coincides with California’s unemployment rate, now second-highest among U.S. states. Newsom’s administration has faced mounting criticism as residents question the effectiveness of his economic policies amid rising costs of living, housing shortages, and the departure of businesses.

Bateman’s comments have garnered attention in the context of growing discontent among Californians over the state’s economic landscape and Newsom’s leadership.

The actress’s callouts reflect a broader sentiment among some residents who believe California is veering off course, with limited action from its leaders to address its multifaceted issues.

As Newsom promotes initiatives like the tax credit program, the debate over his leadership and California’s economic health remains a focal point in the state.

With declining job opportunities and struggles within the entertainment industry, Newsom’s efforts to stabilize California’s economy continue to face public scrutiny.
