Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and her fellow “progressive” Democrats have stirred the pot once again by introducing legislation to restore U.S. funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
This organization has been flagged due to its ties to Hamas and even saw some of its employees directly involved in the horrific October 7 attack against Israel. Despite these alarming facts, Schakowsky is pushing ahead with the so-called “UNRWA Funding Emergency Restoration Act of 2024,” as reported by Breitbart.
The bill stands little chance of passing, which makes this move all the more bizarre. It’s a hollow gesture with no real chance of making a difference — except, of course, in stoking controversy.

Former President Donald Trump wisely cut off funding to UNRWA in 2018, citing its role in fueling Palestinian hatred toward Israel and Jews. Trump recognized that UNRWA perpetuates the dangerous myth that Israel will one day cease to exist.
However, under President Joe Biden’s administration, more than $700 million was funneled back into the organization.
After the tragic events of October 7, where multiple UNRWA employees participated in the terrorist attack, the Biden administration, alongside several other nations, hit pause on the funding.
Yet, following a sham “investigation,” several countries, though not the U.S., reinstated their financial support for UNRWA. This came even after the agency itself admitted that nine of its employees were potentially involved in the massacre, with one being accused of dragging a fallen Israeli’s body into Gaza.
It’s baffling to many that Schakowsky, whose district is home to a significant Jewish population, would push for more funding to a group entangled with terrorism.
In her statement, Schakowsky and other Democrats defended UNRWA, claiming the agency plays a vital role in providing aid to millions of Palestinian refugees. They cited the U.S.’s historical support for UNRWA, arguing that other nations, including European countries, have resumed funding after the so-called reforms were put in place.
Schakowsky claims, “The U.S. must follow suit and resume funding for this critical humanitarian agency,” but fails to directly address the fact that UNRWA employees have been involved in terrorism. Interestingly, the far-left J Street organization, funded by George Soros, is backing this misguided legislation.
J Street claims to support peace but consistently sides against Israel in Congress. By backing this bill, they are essentially advocating for an organization with blood on its hands.
Jeremy Ben-Ami, President of J Street, attempted to rationalize the support by saying, “Punishing children and an entire civilian population for the purported sins of a few is not only wrong – it’s immensely dangerous.” However, Israel has made it clear: UNRWA will have no role in postwar Gaza and must be replaced by other agencies.
