Pop superstar Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race is stirring some negative responses among voters, according to a recent YouGov poll.

The survey, which polled 1,120 potential voters between September 11-12, revealed that Swift’s support for Harris might have backfired, with more voters indicating they are less likely to support the Democratic candidate.

The YouGov poll shows that only 8% of respondents said Swift’s endorsement made them “somewhat” or “much more likely” to vote for Harris, while 20% said they are now “somewhat” or “much less likely” to support the vice president’s campaign.

Swift announced her support for Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Instagram following the first presidential debate.

The Grammy-winning singer shared her views with her 283 million followers, encouraging them to conduct their own research. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice,” Swift said in her post. “Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”

Swift described Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” who could govern with “calm and not chaos.” Despite the singer’s high-profile endorsement, it appears that a significant portion of voters were either unaffected or turned off by her involvement.

According to the poll, 32% of respondents believe Swift’s endorsement could positively impact Harris’ campaign, while 27% think it will have no effect. Forty-one percent of those polled said Swift should refrain from speaking publicly about politics, while 38% felt she should continue to make public endorsements.

The endorsement did, however, lead to a significant increase in traffic to the voter registration website vote.gov. A spokesperson for the General Services Administration (GSA) reported that a custom link shared by Swift on Instagram drove over 405,999 visitors to the website. By comparison, vote.gov received around 30,000 daily visitors during the week leading up to the debate.

Despite the endorsement’s mixed results in terms of voter support, the Harris campaign appears to be leveraging Swift’s popularity.

Democrats have erected billboards in major cities such as Las Vegas and New York City, with the slogan “We’re in Our Kamala Era,” a play on Swift’s massively successful Eras Tour.

The new polling numbers follow a broader discussion about celebrity endorsements in politics and their actual impact on voters.

While Swift’s endorsement mobilized voter registration, her influence on voting preferences remains a subject of debate.

The YouGov poll showed that although 28% of participants identified as fans of Swift, 66% said they were not fans, and 6% identified as “big fans” of the pop icon. Among the big fans, the majority were women and registered Democrats, indicating that Swift’s influence may be limited to her core base.

On a related note, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was seen with Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, at the US Open, stated last week that he does not plan to endorse any political candidates.

Mahomes reiterated his stance, saying, “I’ve always said, I don’t want my place and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate—either way. I think my place is to get people registered [to vote], do their research, and make their best decision for them and their family.”

Mahomes emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in America, highlighting his belief that people of different political beliefs can still come together for common goals. His remarks followed speculation about his wife Brittany Mahomes’ social media activity, which included liking pro-Trump posts.
