In a stunning display of severely misplaced and reckless priorities, more than 150 House Democrats recently voted against a bill that aimed to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sexual offenses and other serious crimes. The bill, H.R. 7909, also known as the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, passed with a vote of 266 to 158. Every Republican present voted in favor, joined by 51 Democrats who broke ranks with their party to support this common-sense measure, as reported by the Gateway Pundit.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nancy Mace, targets illegal aliens convicted of heinous acts like sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, and child abuse, making them inadmissible or deportable.

Bill 7909 Violence Against … by Red Voice News

As reported by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), H.R. 7909 would make those convicted or admitting to these crimes ineligible for U.S. residency. Current law already considers offenses like spousal violence, sex crimes involving minors, and stalking as grounds for inadmissibility or deportation, but this bill sought to strengthen and clarify those protections.

Despite the clear benefits, many Democrats chose to toe the party line rather than protect women and children from violent offenders.

Progressive Caucus Chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal was quick to label the bill “xenophobic,” accusing Republicans of using immigrants as scapegoats. “I probably shouldn’t be too surprised. Scapegoating immigrants and attempting to weaponize the crime of domestic violence is appearing to be a time-honored tradition for Republicans,” she said, according to Fox News.

These accusations fall flat when confronted with the real-world consequences of lax immigration enforcement. Time and again, tragic stories emerge of Americans falling victim to criminal illegal immigrants.

For instance, Laken Riley, a young woman, was murdered in 2024 by Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Matthew Carney, a Nashville restaurant owner, was killed in a hit-and-run incident by an illegal immigrant from Mexico. Scott Miller, a 64-year-old grandfather, was brutally killed by an illegal immigrant who had been deported several times but repeatedly re-entered the country, taking advantage of weak border security. Plus the tragic case of 12-year-old Maria Gonzalez, who an illegal immigrant in Texas killed, underscores the urgent need for stronger deportation policies.

As the list of victims continues to grow, Democrats still refuse to tackle the glaring issues in immigration enforcement. The passing of H.R. 7909 is a step forward. Still, the decision by more than 150 Democrats to vote against it raises serious doubts about their true priorities and commitment to public safety.
