In a heated exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took offense to the airing of a clip featuring Donald Trump during an interview. Tapper presented a snippet of Trump criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris for her cognitive abilities, which immediately triggered Pelosi’s response, as reported by Fox News.

The segment in question showed Trump stating, “They laugh at us all over the world. They’re laughing at us. And you know what they’re really laughing at? Kamala, because they can’t believe that she’s going to be president… She’s got bigger cognitive problems than [Biden] has, in my opinion.”

Tapper then summarized Trump’s statement, explaining, “Donald Trump is saying that Kamala Harris has bigger cognitive problems than Joe Biden.”

Pelosi, visibly irritated, shot back at Tapper, asking, “Why would you even cover that?” She referred to Trump as someone who “is not on the level,” adding, “He is their nominee for president. He is incompetent. Let‘s not even talk about the silliness of it all, and the weirdness of it all, on the assault on women that it is.”

Pelosi wasn’t done there. She launched into a broader criticism of Trump’s performance as president, accusing him of having “the worst job creation record of any president since Herbert Hoover.”

Tapper quickly responded, attributing much of that record to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pelosi rejected that rationale outright, instead blaming Trump’s administration for mishandling the pandemic and its deadly consequences.

“Denial and delay,” she claimed, were at the heart of Trump’s failure, which she said was responsible for the deaths of “thousands and thousands and thousands” of Americans.

Despite Pelosi’s criticism, Tapper defended his decision to show the Trump clip, explaining, “Let me just say, why do I run that clip? I run that clip because that’s the Republican presidential nominee, and I thought you might have a reaction to it.”

This wasn’t the first time Tapper had faced pushback from Pelosi. At the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August, Tapper retreated after a similar interaction when Pelosi grew frustrated over questions regarding tensions between her and President Biden.

Pelosi quipped, “[W]hy are we even talking about it?” To which Tapper, attempting to deflect the tension, jokingly replied, “They’re holding my cat hostage.”
