Hunter Biden is once again in hot water, as he plans to change his plea to guilty on federal tax charges, according to his attorney, Abbe Lowell.

This surprise revelation came during a court session on Thursday, catching federal prosecutors completely off guard. Initially, Biden had pleaded not guilty, but his legal team now appears ready to reverse course, as reported by Fox News.

Leo Wise, a federal prosecutor, expressed shock at the announcement, stating, “this is the first we are hearing about this.”

Despite the sudden turn of events, it’s important to note that Hunter’s plea switch is not set in stone yet. A source close to Special Counsel David Weiss’ team indicated this was merely an offer from the defense, and nothing has been finalized.

The idea of an Alford plea has been floated—a legal maneuver where the defendant doesn’t admit guilt but concedes that the prosecutor likely has enough evidence to convict.

However, the Department of Justice generally frowns upon accepting these types of pleas, except in extraordinary circumstances, so it’s unclear if this route will even be pursued.

Adding to the drama, communication between Biden’s legal team and the special counsel appears to have hit a snag.

A source familiar with Weiss’ team reported that discussions between the two sides have stalled. Meanwhile, the Justice Department in Washington is trying to figure out how and when they should get involved in the matter.

Weiss has charged Biden with three felonies and six misdemeanors related to his failure to pay taxes on $1.4 million in income—a debt that Biden has since paid.

The indictment accuses the president’s son of orchestrating a “four-year scheme” where he deliberately avoided paying his federal taxes from 2016 to 2019. The indictment also alleges that Biden filed false tax returns during that period to cover his tracks.

Part of the allegations involves Biden’s company, Owasco, PC, through which he is accused of siphoning millions of dollars outside the company’s payroll and tax withholding system.

Rather than paying his tax obligations, Biden allegedly funded an extravagant lifestyle, leaving his tax bills in the dust.

This isn’t Hunter’s first run-in with the law this year.

He was previously convicted on firearm-related charges, including making false statements during a gun purchase and possessing a firearm while addicted to a controlled substance.

These convictions alone could result in up to 25 years in prison, with fines of $250,000 per count.

Adding another layer of complexity, President Biden has vowed not to pardon his son, leaving Hunter to face the consequences of his legal battles on his own.
