During a visit to a fire station in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, Joe Biden briefly donned a “Trump 2024” hat in an unexpected moment that quickly went viral.
The incident occurred as Biden interacted with first responders and community members following a ceremony marking the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
As Joe Biden mingled with attendees, a Trump supporter initiated a lighthearted exchange, offering Biden his red “Trump 2024” cap.

In return, Biden offered to trade one of his hats, pointing out the “presidential seal” on it. The Trump supporter, wearing “Punisher” suspenders, insisted that Biden sign the Trump hat to seal the deal. Biden agreed, but the exchange quickly turned playful.
“Do you remember your name?” the Trump supporter quipped. Biden responded with a chuckle, “I don’t remember my name. I’m slow.” The supporter continued, calling the president an “old fart,” to which Biden responded, “I’m an old guy.”
In the midst of the back-and-forth, Biden briefly placed the “Trump 2024” hat on his head, which quickly attracted attention from the crowd. “I’m proud of you now, you old fart,” the Trump supporter said. As Biden walked away, he humorously added, “Just remember, no eating dogs and cats,” to which the Trump supporter strangely replied, “They’re good… like Kentucky Fried Chicken.”
Footage of the moment quickly spread online, with the Trump campaign capitalizing on the visual.
The Trump War Room account posted a video of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), adding, “Kamala did so bad in last night’s debate, Joe Biden just put on a Trump hat.”

The White House later explained the incident, saying it was meant as a gesture of bipartisanship. “At the Shanksville Fire Station, @POTUS spoke about the country’s bipartisan unity after 9/11 and said we needed to get back to that,” White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates wrote on X. “As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it.”

However, the Trump campaign took the opportunity to criticize Biden, posting sarcastic remarks such as “Thanks for the support, Joe!” while senior Trump adviser Chris LaCivita added, “What’s Happening?” alongside a photo of Biden wearing the hat.

The exchange occurred during a day of somber remembrance in Shanksville, where Biden, Kamala Harris, and other political figures paid tribute to the victims of United Airlines Flight 93. The plane was brought down by passengers who thwarted the hijackers’ attempt to crash it into a U.S. landmark, believed to be either the White House or the U.S. Capitol.
The day was not without its political undertones. Just a day earlier, during the presidential debate with Kamala Harris, Trump had joked about sending her a “MAGA” hat, mocking her for adopting policies similar to his. “I was going to send her a ‘MAGA’ hat. She’s going to my philosophy,” Trump said during the debate.

Biden’s brief appearance in the Trump hat, though intended as a lighthearted gesture, quickly became fodder for political conversation, with critics and supporters interpreting the moment through different lenses.
As the 2024 race heats up, these exchanges continue to highlight the stark political divide and the ongoing debate over the direction of the country.
