Ryan Wesley Routh, the failed Trump assassination suspect, carries a disturbing history, according to local sources. A longtime resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, Routh has a rap sheet stretching across decades, featuring charges ranging from writing bad checks to more serious offenses involving weapons, as reported by the New York Post.
Routh’s criminal record in Guilford County spans from the 1980s to the 2010s. His most significant charge was possession of a weapon of mass destruction in 2002, including a “binary explosive with a 10-inch detonation cord and a blasting cap.” Other offenses include possessing a stolen vehicle and illegal firearms.
Routh’s neighbor, Kim Mungo, who lived near him for nearly two decades, described Routh and his family as “weird.” According to Mungo, Routh’s behavior was eccentric, even keeping a live horse inside his home. She commented, “He had a horse in the house. I mean, a whole live horse in the house. But I could see the guns and stuff and all. They were kind of weird, but they didn’t bother me.”

While Routh’s strange habits raised eyebrows, he largely kept to himself, as Mungo noted. “I told all my friends because they didn’t believe me,” she said. She even went as far as to confirm a photo of Routh to law enforcement after the recent assassination attempt. Despite his odd nature, Mungo insisted that he was a “sweet guy” and that his daughter and her daughter were once close friends.
The family’s political stance seemed non-existent, as Mungo and other neighbors indicated that Routh never expressed any strong political opinions. Fox News reports that many in the neighborhood were shocked by his involvement in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
Civil court records reveal that Routh’s daughter lived with him full-time following his 2003 divorce. His ex-wife, who now resides with her current husband, was described by another neighbor as living a seemingly normal life. Police activity at the home was spotted on Sunday evening following Routh’s arrest at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach.
In 2009, Routh’s ex-wife raised concerns about his financial instability and agreed to terminate child support. Federal authorities have charged Routh with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. More charges could potentially follow.
Though Routh’s public defender did not respond to inquiries, this case adds another bizarre chapter to a history of criminal activity that’s left both neighbors and law enforcement puzzled.
