The House Administration Committee, led by Chairman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), is calling for investigations in five states over potential illegal political donations routed through ActBlue.

In a bold move, Steil reached out to attorneys general in Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, and Florida, urging them to open probes into what he describes as “suspicious activity” that could involve “straw donors.” These straw donors are individuals whose names are allegedly used without their knowledge to funnel contributions to high-profile Democrats, including Kamala Harris, as reported by Just The News.

Steil’s push for investigations stems from a comprehensive computer analysis conducted by his committee. This analysis reviewed over 200 million Federal Election Commission records from the last 14 years.

The investigation uncovered patterns where donations exceeded what an individual’s financial status would suggest is possible, raising red flags.

Steil’s letters to the attorneys general highlighted donor profiles that showed significant inconsistencies and recommended further review into these potential criminal activities.

“This investigation focused on the unlawful exploitation of unwitting ‘straw donors’ whose identities may have been used to channel illicit funds into campaigns,” Steil wrote, emphasizing the need for transparency and integrity in the election process. He stopped short of accusing specific individuals but provided detailed records of suspicious donations in each state.

Historically, straw donation scandals have plagued the Democratic Party.

The infamous China Gate scandal during Bill Clinton’s administration involved wealthy businessmen tied to China, funneling millions through straw donors.

Steil’s recent findings echo some of those past concerns, though on a much larger scale with hundreds of millions at stake.

ActBlue, the powerful fundraising platform for Democrats, has not responded to these latest allegations, but they’ve consistently denied wrongdoing.

The platform is currently under investigation by several attorneys general. Notably, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a probe into ActBlue in December 2023, alleging fraudulent activity, and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares followed suit this August after similar fraud claims.

Steil remains confident that these state investigations will yield significant findings. “When I became Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I made a commitment that election integrity and security would be a top priority,” Steil said.

His recent work with whistleblowers and experts on financial crimes, such as money laundering and credit card fraud, has bolstered his committee’s efforts to uncover these irregularities.

In response to these growing concerns, Steil has introduced legislation, H.R. 9488, which would require card verification codes (CVVs) on all online political donations, a measure aimed at curbing fraud.

Additionally, this legislation would criminalize aiding or abetting campaign contributions made in someone else’s name.
