The mpox virus has been detected in San Francisco's wastewater, following its designation as a "public health emergency of international concern" by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WastewaterSCAN Dashboard, a tool that tracks infectious diseases within communities, mpox—formerly known as monkeypox—was found in southeast San Francisco on July 26, August 11, and August 12.

It's important to note that the source of these detections is unclear, meaning it’s not confirmed whether the virus came from human sources.

San Francisco's database on the virus, titled "Mpox data and reports," has not yet posted any data for August. However, it does record one case of mpox in July.

Back in May, the San Francisco Health Department advised residents to prioritize their sexual health as summer approached, recommending full vaccination against mpox.
