CNN’s Tom Foreman took Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to task on Wednesday for his claims about carrying weapons in combat.
Foreman, appearing on “CNN News Central” with Brianna Keilar, challenged Walz’s assertions made while discussing gun control.

Foreman dismissed Walz’s statements as unsupported, saying there is “no evidence” that the governor ever faced combat situations. “Walz has suggested in several speeches that he carried weapons in a combat setting,” Foreman explained. “However, from my military background, and considering the facts, there is no proof that Walz was ever in a situation where he was actually shot at. His language might mislead people into thinking otherwise.”
Foreman continued, “The campaign’s defense is typical: they argue that Walz’s long career should absolve him of any intentional misrepresentation. Nevertheless, this issue highlights a broader concern about the authenticity of military claims in political debates.”
This controversy gained attention when Walz, in a 2018 video from his campaign, suggested that the weapons he used in war should be banned. “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at,” Walz stated.
Here Walz is stumping for banning your guns and at the end of his rant, he claims he carried “weapons of war” “in war”. Everything I can find about him says he didn’t serve in combat and it’s being reported when war came, he dodged deployment. pic.twitter.com/79TlC7aloB

The Walz campaign responded, asserting that Walz “would never insult or undermine any American’s service” despite repeated acts of stolen valor.

Republican candidate J.D. Vance also weighed in, labeling Walz’s claims as “dishonest” and questioning the credibility of his military service statements.

When Tim Walz was asked to go to Iraq, he dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him.
