A former sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to one year in jail this week for having unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, who happened to be the 16 year-old son of her ex-boyfriend.

Former Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy Shauna Bishop had been dating a man who also worked for the sheriff’s department, and is said to be “a high-ranking officer,” according to the Sacramento Bee. The man reportedly broke up with her in April of 2019 after dating her for one year.

Court documents show that the man told his ex-wife that he was worried that Bishop had an “inappropriate” relationship with their son, and that she was “grooming” the boy for sex. The boy’s mother checked his cellphone to figure out what was going on, later telling police, “I found nothing that led me to believe there was more to the relationship than what it was.”

The mother went on to become close friends with Bishop after the breakup, despite the concerns that had been raised by her ex-husband. On April 28, 2019, she asked Bishop to come to her home to talk to her son about his drinking and marijuana usage. The 44 year-old deputy arrived at around 8pm and ended up staying the night.

“We all three sat on the couch and I wanted Shauna there with me because (the victim) really responds well to her and I knew it would be easier to discuss if she was with me,” the boy’s mother recalled.

The 16 year-old would later tell police that on this night, Bishop snuck into his room and engaged in both sexual intercourse and oral sex with him. Two weeks later, he told his 19-year-old sister about what had happened, and she immediately told their mother, who called the Folsom Police Department.

The mother also called Bishop to ask if she “did something” the night she slept over. Bishop claimed that she had been under the influence of Ambien, which both women had taken together that night.

“When he told me what happened, I had no idea,” Bishop reportedly said, according to court papers. “I was so drugged. I thought it was a dream. I’ve been so sick over it. I literally have no recollection.”

The boy did not want to tell police what happened at first due to fears for Bishop and her children.

“I really don’t want anything to happen to Shauna,” the boy told officers. “I am worried for her kids. She has a 16-year-old daughter and 20-year-old daughter and I don’t want to see them get hurt. I really wish this would all just go away.”

The boy’s parents finally filed a police report in June of 2019, and Bishop was soon arrested. After being with the police department for five years, Bishop was placed on paid leave in May of 2019 during the investigation and resigned in August of 2019.

“Although Bishop is a deputy sheriff, she did not meet the victim through her job nor did the alleged acts occur while on duty. Detectives do not believe there are additional victims,” the Folsom Police Department said in a statement last June.

In July of this year, she took a deal in which she pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse, with prosecutors dismissing four other charges against her per the agreement.

The former sheriff’s deputy was sentenced on Wednesday to one year in county jail, five years of probation, and she must register as a sex offender, according to KCRA. Once she is released, Bishop will also need to serve 180 days on the sheriff’s work project.
