New reports are coming in stating that Prince William would like to “do his bit” to fight the coronavirus pandemic by returning to work as an air ambulance pilot, a job he held for two years before stepping down in 2017 to focus on his royal duties.

Sources told the U.K. Sun that William has been telling those close to him that he would like to make his return to the cockpit so that he can be on the frontline fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

However, since William is one of the only senior royals working right now, he might not be permitted to return to flying as he wishes.

“William has been seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to help in the current pandemic,” a source explained. “He knows the whole country is doing its bit and he wants to help. But it’s complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal.”

The source went on to explain that other senior royals are not available to pick up William’s duties while he’s gone for various reasons.

“That role is even more important now given that Charles has been ill, Harry has walked away with Meghan and Andrew has been effectively barred from public life,” the source said. “But William is very keen to do anything he can to help.”

William has previously described his time working with the East Anglian Air Ambulance as a “privilege,” and earlier this month, he confessed to 111 call center staffers in Croydon, South London that he desperately wanted to return to the job.

“He was asking about how busy we have been, and what shifts everybody was doing,” said call handler Tracy Pidgeon.

“We were saying everybody was working really hard. He misses the helicopter, being on the front line. He just said he misses it.”

Deaths from coronavirus have risen from 180 to 1,408 in the U.K. this week, so William’s help would undoubtedly be much appreciated.

For the time being, William is staying with his wife Kate and their three children at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, which he was living during his time flying the air ambulance.

“There are all sorts of practicalities to overcome such as fitting in on shift patterns,” a source said. “But he’s in the right place now if he wants to do it.”
