Gene Purdie was born with Stargardt disease, which is a form of macular degeneration that leads to loss of vision. He was not diagnosed with the disease until he was 16, though he has had it since he was born.

While his peripheral vision is just okay, the disease has led to Gene's central vision to becoming very blurred. When Gene met his wife Joy, the disease had already gotten so bad that he was never able to clearly see what she looks like.

Despite the challenges they were facing, Gene and Joy built a happy life together, and they even welcomed a son. They were resigned to the fact that Gene would always be legally blind, since there is no cure for Stargardt disease. Then Joy was watching The Rachel Ray Show one day when she saw something that would change everything...

She was stunned to see that a special pair of glasses had been developed that allow people with Stargardt disease to see clearly again! As soon as she saw the glasses, Joy knew that she had to do whatever she could to get them for her husband.

After writing into The Rachel Ray Show, Gene and Joy were invited to come on the program to try the glasses out themselves! On live television, Gene saw his beautiful wife and son for the first time ever, and their reactions will bring tears to your eyes. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when they heard the first words Gene said to Joy upon seeing her.
