Yes, it’s come to this. Some therapists are telling their anxious, irritable patients to stop watching the political news that’s upsetting them so much — and try a downward-facing dog pose instead.

People have complained of trouble sleeping, irritability, and heart palpitations, according to an article in Reuters for which several therapists were interviewed. The therapists said they’re advising clients to watch less news and start some deep breathing and yoga exercises to relax.

“I’ve never seen this level of stress and anxiety over an impending election in my 26 years [of work],” Nancy Molitor, a clinical psychologist from outside Chicago, told Reuters.

As the publication also notes, “There is no data available to quantify the election-related anxiety, but the therapists’ anecdotes give some insight into the state of the national psyche.”

Elaine Ducharme, a clinical psychologist in Glastonbury, Connecticut, told Reuters the impending presidential election between Donald J. Trump, the Republican, and Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democrat, was also a worry for her patients.

“I can’t think of a person I’ve talked to [who] does not feel anxious about this,” she said.

Another therapist told her clients literally to “turn off the news feed. Stop reading everything if it just gets you more stressed.”
