As Daniel Day-Lewis Retires, a Look at His Four Best Performances

Your favorite film might just be on this list — check out the choices for this accomplished actor

Daniel Day-Lewis has never been fond of being the public eye. He avoids interviews as much as he can and rarely speaks about anything beyond his work.

It’s arguably what has helped him become one of the greatest actors of his generation. The versatile thespian has won three Academy Awards and worked with every director — from Steven Spielberg to Martin Scorsese.

Day-Lewis typically remained quiet between films, often with years passing between them. The last picture released with him was 2012’s “Lincoln,” a blockbuster and critically acclaimed picture that earned him his third Oscar.

Now, at only 60 years old, he has announced through a spokesperson that he's retiring from acting.

"Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject," said Leslie Dart, the actor's spokesperson, to Variety.

The statement is as bold and as unflinching as Day-Lewis' work in front of the camera. While it's a shame to see such a talented actor walk away from a craft he's clearly mastered, he leaves behind a rather impressive filmography, one not filled with the clunkers and paycheck-grabbing roles that fill the resumes of other actors. Day-Lewis has nothing to apologize for and the carefulness with which he chose projects is evident in his body of work.

The actor has one final untitled movie set for release on Christmas of this year. Variety has reported that a person familiar with Day-Lewis confirmed he will promote it.
