Joe Biden’s people, to manufacture the image of a done deal, are putting out feelers for a possible running mate. Bernie Sanders, to mimic that and give his people some hope for the future, is doing the same thing. Both, it is said, are only looking at women for the junior slot. In the PC Democratic Party it is not a surprise that gender, not qualification for high office, is the determining factor.

Didn’t that used to be called sexism?

DC sources say the Biden people are high on Senator Amy Klobuchar. She helped them win the Michigan primary, endorsed Biden just before that primary, is younger than Biden, and not seen as particularly alienating. At least, not to people who prefer a watered-down Nurse Ratched as their vice-president.

The Sanders people like Senator Elizabeth Warren for ideological reasons but are worried about her personal favorability ratings. Warren is playing it smart (for once) and holding off a presidential endorsement until she gets a high price from one of the two men. She’d prefer Sanders. But she also understands, as does Biden, that she would ideologically balance out a Biden-led ticket. With Sanders she’d just be another far-leftist doomed to defeat in November.

Senator Kamala Harris is also being talked about. However, she is from a state the Democrats will easily carry. They need a swing vote player.

But there is another name that has Democrat tongues wagging and Republicans taking notice: Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.

Whitmer is young, 48, very telegenic, articulate, and from a swing state the Democrats must flip blue if they have any chance of beating Trump. She gave the Democrat response to the president’s State of the Union address and by all accounts, on both sides of the barricades, did a good job. Some have called her the Democrat Nikki Haley.

Like other Democrats this season, Whitmer is a leftist but comes across as moderate in demeanor and message. She would definitely hold her own in debate against Mike Pence.

There will be a lot more talk on this subject until the convention. If Biden wins on the first ballot, Klobuchar or Whitmer are solid bets. But if it goes to a brokered convention, in this as in so many other Democrat options, all bets are off.
