A new group of caravan migrants hailing from Central America passed unobstructed through open gates at the Guatemala-Mexico border on Friday — then continued on their way toward the  U.S.

Approximately 1,000 migrants passed through the gates into Mexico as authorities merely stood by and watched, according to Fox News. Although the gates remained open only temporarily, it’s unclear whether Mexican authorities intentionally left them open for the migrants to pass through — or whether those headed here broke any of the locks.

Because the migrants gained such easy entry, they didn’t need to register with any immigration officials before continuing their trek toward the U.S.

An official told Fox News that the Mexican police officers “did not want to confront” the migrants and cause a violent clash, such as the ones that occurred when the previous group passed through the border.

Earlier in January, a group of 150 migrants tried to rush the border and threw rocks at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents. The agents deployed tear gas as the migrants tried to enter the U.S. illegally.

A much-reported Central American migrant caravan had made its way toward the U.S. during the last few months of 2018, prompting more urgency in securing border wall funding.

But many mainstream media outlets as well as Democratic lawmakers greatly dismissed the caravan concern or downplayed its significance.

Many also accused President Donald Trump and Republicans of “manufacturing” the border crisis to score political points.

“The same people who claim there isn’t a crisis on the border claimed there wasn’t a caravan. And we found out differently, didn’t we?” former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting Director Thomas Homan told Fox News host Laura Ingraham earlier in January. “There’s a crisis on the border.”

Trump reacted to the caravan last year by demanding Congress provide border wall funding and pass other immigration enforcement measures.

But the government partially shut down just before Christmas when Democratic leaders refused to give the president the $5 billion he requested for funding the border security wall.

And Trump took note of the new caravan’s passage into Mexico on Friday, tweeting, “Another big caravan heading our way. Very hard to stop without a wall!”

The president added, “Never seen the Republican Party so unified. No ‘cave’ on the issue of border and national security. A beautiful thing to see, especially when you hear the new rhetoric spewing from the mouths of the Democrats who talk open border, high taxes and crime. Stop criminals & drugs now!”
