Americans elected President Donald Trump because he “was intent on solving the nation’s problems” and had “the ideas to solve” the immigration crisis at the southern border, Fox News contributor and Washington Times columnist Monica Crowley said Monday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

Trump remained in Washington, D.C., this past weekend as the partial government shutdown dragged on — and as a snowstorm struck.

But more than 30 Democratic lawmakers left Washington, D.C., behind to fly out to a luxurious seaside resort in the Hurricane Maria-ravaged Puerto Rico with 109 lobbyists and business executives on Friday for a retreat.

They watched a special fundraising production of the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” helmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the rest of the original cast, and attended posh parties.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) was even spotted on the beach, as Fox News reported.

Trump blasted Democratic lawmakers on Twitter over the weekend, writing, “I’m in the White House, waiting. The Democrats are everywhere but Washington as people await their pay. They are having fun and not even talking!”

The Democrats departed for Puerto Rico “in the middle of a government shutdown when the president has been sitting in the snow, in the Oval Office now for weeks, wanting to talk to the Democrats and broker a deal,” Crowley noted.

The government partially shut down near the end of December after Democrats refused to give Trump the $5 billion he requested in border wall funding.

Trump delivered his first Oval Office address last week in a prime-time TV address. He pointedly asked the Democrats, “How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?”

But Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) delivered their joint rebuttals that same day and have refused to budge on border wall funding or offer any deal that includes wall funding.

“What you see there, Laura — the Democrats going to Puerto Rico, basking in the sun and the surf — that demonstrates the arrogance of a party that knows that they have no fear of any consequences because they have the protection of the press,” Crowley told Fox News host Laura Ingraham.

“If this had been the Republicans down there basking in the Caribbean, holy hell would have broken loose,” said Crowley. “So this points to the corruption of the media that protects the Democratic Party and their agenda.”

Crowley also said that the Democratic lawmakers’ behavior “also points to something bigger — they do not want to work with the Trump administration or this president because they consider him fundamentally illegitimate.”

But the American people elected Trump “because he wasn’t one of” the political elites, Crowley said. “He came in as a successful businessman who was intent on solving the nation’s problems.”

Members of both major political parties “have looked the other way” on important issues such as the immigration crisis at the southern border “because it’s behooved them to keep this issue going,” she said.

“Trump got elected because he said, ‘I’m going to come in and I’m going to solve this.’ He’s sitting in the White House saying, ‘I have the ideas to solve this, but you need to meet me — maybe not even halfway, maybe even a quarter of the way, Democrats’ — and they won’t even do that,” Crowley said.

But Fox News contributor and “The Five” co-host Juan Williams dismissed the Democratic lawmakers’ Puerto Rican getaway. Yet he said if Trump had departed on his own vacation to Mar-a-Lago in Florida, that would have been an entirely “different” matter altogether.

“Trump is the one who shut the government. These 30 people are not the ones who shut the government,” Williams claimed.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders slammed the 30 Democratic lawmakers on Twitter on Sunday, writing, “Democrats in Congress are so alarmed about federal workers not getting paid they’re partying on the beach instead of negotiating a compromise to reopen the government and secure the border.”

The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted, “And of course no one says anything. I’m not even in government and I’d get killed in the press if I was on vacation right now. Why won’t they cover their Democrat buddies lobbyist sponsored vacation in the islands???”
