2.) Wimbledon goes through lots of tennis balls. When most of us play tennis, we might buy a can with three balls in it and use those for a week or two, probably longer. That’s not good enough for the pros at Wimbledon. They switch to brand new tennis balls for just about every play.

Add that up across the 647 matches that comprise the 14-day tournament — and the folks at Wimbledon go through thousands of bright yellow tennis balls. Last year, the championship chewed up 54,250 balls. In 2010, 123 balls were used in just one match, the longest one in Wimbledon history — John Isner vs. Nicholas Mahut. That matchup lasted a staggering 11 hours and was played over the course of three days.

Oh, and those bright yellow tennis balls? They were white until 1986, when the games began to be televised; the white balls were too easily lost in the background, so the yellow color was added. (go to page 4 to continue reading) [lz_pagination]
