3.) “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” (May 19). The “Wimpy Kid” franchise has quietly become a favorite of families everywhere. The first film was a sleeper hit at the box office in 2011. Now comes “The Long Haul,” a movie about a family road trip in which the kids have a real intention of visiting a video game convention.
While a lot of Hollywood material has been growing darker and more cynical, franchises such as “Wimpy Kid” are quietly providing positive and solid entertainment for families looking for something different at their local multiplex.
