Former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalized in Houston, Texas, for shortness of breath, his office said in a statement. His wife of 72 years, Barbara, has also been hospitalized as a precaution, due to fatigue and coughing.

The former president, 92, is at Houston Methodist Hospital to address “an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia” and is said to be resting comfortably. A procedure was done to clear his airway that required sedation, family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

While President and Mrs. Bush were scheduled to attend the 58th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony this Friday at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., that now appears unlikely.

“He’s been in Methodist since Saturday and has responded very well to treatments,” McGrath told ABC News about the former president. “Doctors and everyone are very pleased, and we hope to have him out soon.”
