These are the painfully canned moments from debates that we’re sure most Americans are not missing since the 2016 election.

During the CNN town hall debate between GOP Senator Ted Cruz and independent Senator Bernie Sanders Wednesday night, the Republican delivered an obviously planned line poking at his opponent.

When Sanders was interrupting Cruz during one of his points, the Texas senator told Sanders to “curb your enthusiasm.” This was an overt reference to the popular show of the same name —”Curb Your Enthusiasm” — starring Larry David.

David infamously did a spot-on impression of Sanders during the 2016 season of “Saturday Night Live.”

Cruz’s joke drew a few laughs, and he could have moved on — but instead, he proceeded to take the joke too far and explain what he was talking about. Watch the cringeworthy moment above.
