The town of Durant in rural Mississippi is in shock after two nuns were found slain in their home Thursday morning.

Officials are considering the possibility of break-in and theft. While authorities will not confirm whether there is a suspect, they did say they recovered a car that was missing from the home, according to Deseret News.

The two nuns were nurse practitioners whose vocation was helping the poor. They were found after not showing up to work at a nearby clinic which provides flu shots, insulin, and medical care for those who cannot afford it.

Maureen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, said there were signs of a break-in at the home and the nuns’ vehicle was missing.

“Later, Warren Strain, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said the blue Toyota Corolla was found abandoned Thursday evening on a secluded street barely a mile from the home, the vehicle apparently undamaged,” reports Deseret News.

It is not clear whether there is a motive, or if the nuns’ religious affiliation had anything to do with the murder.
