Sitora Yusufiy, the ex-wife of the man who killed and injured more than 100 people at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub, knew something was very wrong with Omar Mateen. That is why she fled their abusive marriage in 2009 with the help of her parents. Yusufiy now lives with her fianće in Boulder, Colorado, The New York Times reported.

Although Yusufiy “let that chapter of my life go a long time ago,” the man who “hurt and traumatized” her sneaked back into her life when he committed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. She was interviewed by FBI agents after the incident Sunday. Although officials have said Mateen was investigated in 2013 and 2014, this is the first time, Yusufiy said, that she was questioned by officials about her ex-husband.

Yusufiy immigrated from Uzbekistan in 2000 and met Mateen on Myspace in 2008. While dating, Yusufiy said Mateen was nice and respectful. Although he was born in America, Mateen had a connection to their shared culture and after a few dates, their parents met to make formal marriage plans, The New York Times reported.

“I didn’t have any knowledge or feeling of his instability,” Yusufiy said.

Six weeks into the marriage, she began to notice his erratic behavior. He had a temper that was set off easily and he became verbally and physically abusive, Yusufiy said. He didn’t allow her to contact her family and only allowed her to go to her job as a day care teacher. He made her give him every paycheck. Yusufiy added that he was “totally two different people sometimes.”

According to his ex-wife, Mateen was religious, but never expressed solidarity with terrorists or radical Islamists. He did, however, express his dislike of homosexuals, according to The New York Times.

Mateen kept a handgun in the house and would go target shooting with his friends, some of which were in law enforcement. He never threatened her with the gun; nonetheless, she said it concerned her. When her parents began to see the gravity of the abuse, they went to Florida and removed their daughter, taking her back to New Jersey.

Yusufiy said she only heard from her ex-husband once, about a year ago, when he sent her a message on Facebook looking to reconnect. She told him to never contact her again and blocked him on social media, The New York Times reported.
