American shooter Ginny Thrasher, 19, won the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics on Saturday for the United States, in the women’s 10-meter air rifle — perhaps the most precise sport of the Games.

The Springfield, West Virginia, native beat out silver medalist Du Li of China in the final round with a total of 208.0 — also setting a new Olympic record in the finals. Du finished with 207.0 (Du, 34, won gold medals in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics). Yi Siling of China took the bronze.

Thrasher wasn’t considered a medal favorite in the Rio Olympics. “I knew it was realistic for me to make finals, but I was not focused on that,” she said, according to USA Today. “I was focusing on just shooting the best I could, and that got me there.”

Thrasher began shooting just five years ago, felling a deer while hunting with her grandfather, The Washington Post reported.

She is an NCAA champion at West Virginia, and Rio is her first Olympics outing. Three years ago, as a junior at West Springfield High, Thrasher was the 45th-best junior air rifle shooter in the nation.

“I am honestly just happy to be here. This is beyond my wildest dreams … Once you get into the finals, anything can happen,” Thrasher said, adding, “I’m happy to positively represent my country.”
