In the most grantings of clemency in a single day since at least 1900, President Obama commuted the prison sentences of 214 people on Wednesday — for a total of 562 commutations during his presidency.

That’s more than the last nine presidents combined, according to the White House.

The president explained the reasoning for his decision in a lengthy post on Facebook. Most of the prisoners were incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses.

“White House counsel Neil Eggleston says Obama will continue granting clemency to more inmates during the final months of his presidency,” reports Fox News. Eggleston claims that those receiving commutations received overly harsh sentences under antiquated laws.
