The House voted Thursday in favor of banning the display of the Confederate Battle Flag at Veterans Administration cemeteries. In response, House Speaker Paul Ryan told Republicans to get used to “taking tough votes” like this one.

The 265 to 159 vote prohibits descendants and anyone wishing to commemorate veterans of the Confederate States of America from flying the flag over mass graves.

Democrats celebrated the ban as a pummel against racism, while Ryan warned opponents of the ban that they are simply just going to have to deal with their loss.

“People are going to have to take tough votes,” said Ryan at a press conference, continuing that “the last thing we should do is derail our own appropriations process” just because some representatives strongly oppose the ban.

The amendment still allows families to place miniature flags on individual graves, according to Breitbart.

“Over 150 years ago, slavery was abolished. Why in the year 2016 are we still condoning displays of this hateful symbol on our sacred national cemeteries?” said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) who introduced the amendment Wednesday night.

84 Republicans voted in favor of banning the Confederate flag at national cemeteries, but adversaries of the amendment, like Georgia Republican Lynn Westmoreland, continue to voice their opposition.

“You know who else supports destroying history so that they can advance their own agenda? ISIL. Don’t be like ISIL. I urge you to vote NO,” wrote Westmoreland’s legislative director, Pete Sanborn, in an email.
