A number of former pro football players have admitted they smoked pot before the start of NFL games. Other people currently connected to the game and players today said anonymously that the number of players who get high right before games “could be as high as 75 percent.”

One sports agent who wanted to remain anonymous said, “The number [of players who smoke weed before games] is rumored to be as high as 80 percent.”

All of this is according to a detailed report in the New York Post on Sunday, which also quotes a former player as saying, “I played my best games stoned.”

One former sports pro told the Post, “I had my weed dealer meet me at the players’ parking lot after practice for a delivery.”

Many players apparently believe marijuana use helps relieve their pain from severe football-related injuries and ailments. Others believe it helps them concentrate better. Some want the NFL to drop its policy of testing for marijuana, according to the article. The league orders an annual urinalysis for players, but the number of tests required jumps to 10 times a month if a player fails the first test.

A spokesman for the NFL, Brian McCarthy, told the Post, “Our position on its use remains consistent with federal law and workplace policies across the country.”
