In a surprising and unexpected move, former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz at a Miami campaign rally on Wednesday morning.

“We are going to have to beat Donald Trump at the ballot box, and the only guy who can beat Donald Trump is Ted Cruz,” said Fiorina.

Undoubtedly, Fiorina’s endorsement is a big boost to Cruz’s campaign as he continues to rack up delegates and give Trump a run for his money on the path to the nomination. As Cruz continues to gain momentum as the consensus candidate to Trump he will gain coveted endorsements like those from Fiorina.

But Fiorina has not always been so enthusiastic about Cruz. “Ted Cruz is just like any other politician,” she told CNN’s Dana Bash in January. “He says one thing in Manhattan, he says another thing in Iowa, he says whatever he needs to say to get elected, and then he’s going to do what he pleases.”

Now, it seems as though those opinions are water under the bridge as the GOP presidential field narrows and Cruz is quickly surging as the candidate with the most viability to compete against Trump.

It is no secret that Fiorina and Trump weren’t the best of friends on the campaign trail, with Trump even going so far as to reference her looks as a reason why she couldn’t be elected president. While Fiorina’s campaign fizzled, she is nonetheless a catch for the Cruz campaign in the fight against Trump for the nomination ahead of the winner-take-all contests in the key states of Florida and Ohio. And the endorsement could help him with women, with whom his poll numbers are not as good as they are with men.

“And so, it is time now to unite behind the one man who can beat Donald Trump, who can beat Hillary Clinton, who can beat the DC cartel,” said Fiorina. “It is time to unite behind Ted Cruz.”
