Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys took a dig at the United States at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday evening following the keynote speech from President Bill Clinton.

“Until we deal with gun violence in this country, we can’t claim ‘home of the brave,'” Keys said before performing “Superwoman” and immediately before Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton made a webcam appearance for the assembled delegates.

The odd, and unprovoked swipe at the National Anthem came after the Democratic convention has already come under fire for a measurable lack of patriotism.

Reports on Monday noted the convention stage and decorated arena in Philadelphia featured virtually no images of the American flag.

After the outrage over the lack of patriotic imagery swirled on social media, The Daily Mail reported sightings of Democratic Party staffers frantically wheeling flags into positions around the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

It will remain to be seen whether Democrats are forced to answer for the bold, primetime assertion from Keys that indicated Americans, including uniformed police, the military and ordinary people trying to scrap out a living for their families amid tough times, cannot be considered brave.
