The veterans group Got Your 6 has revealed a batch of 13 newly endorsed media projects via The Hollywood Reporter.

Achieving the recognition of “6 Certified” by this group is now a badge of honor for film and television productions that feature veteran characters or veteran-related stories. Got Your 6 works in writers’ rooms and provides feedback to filmmakers on how to better show well-rounded and realistic versions of America’s veterans on screen.

Newly announced movies to receive the endorsement include “American Veteran,” Denzel Washington’s “Fences,” Netflix’s “Sand Castle,” and “Megan Leavey,” starring Kate Mara.

Television projects include “Criminal Minds,” Netflix’s “Five Came Back,” “This Is Us,” and “Taken.”

“American Veteran” is a documentary about former Army Sergeant Nick Mendes, a quadriplegic who fell in love with and married his caretaker after his time at war. LifeZette recently published an exclusive interview with the director of the film.

“Taken,” based on the popular Liam Neeson-starring franchise, was a project that Got Your 6 consulted on with its writers.

“The military is an ever-present fixture in film, theater, and television, and whether it creates the setting for the storyline or offers insights into a character’s past, it gives viewers a sense of what military service is all about,” 6 Certified Review Committee member Bonnie Carroll, president and founder of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), said in a public statement. “Got Your 6’s certification program provides a vital service, carefully screening films to recognize honorable portrayals and accurate depictions of veterans, elevating the entire entertainment industry to a higher standard.”

“I love to see that ‘veteran’ doesn’t have to be a defining characteristic of a character.”

Review committee member Rory Brosius, vice president of ScoutComms, said in the same public statement: “I love to see that ‘veteran’ doesn’t have to be a defining characteristic of a character; it can just be an aspect of who [that person is] or how [a] life was enriched by service.”

She specifically praised “Megan Leavey.”

Too many film and television products over the years have portrayed veterans and military servicemen and women in negative, near-psychopathic lights. Most artists are ignorant of what actually goes into shaping the human beings who wear the uniform — and this ignorance can lead to portrayals that do no favors to veterans.

Some former military members are portrayed as people destroyed and completely defined by their time in the service. Got Your 6 has made amazing strides to help evolve these cliches and to create more realistic and well-rounded depictions of our troops in film and television. It’s what the men and women who have served this country deserve, along with so much more.
