It’s a lifetime as far as marriages of famous entertainers go: Country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have been married since Oct. 6, 1996.

At the 2017 Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night, the two performed a duet  of their song, “Speak to a Girl.”

“She don’t give a damn ’bout your Benjamin Franklins, she wants Aretha. She don’t really care how you’re spending your money, it’s all how you treat her. She just want a friend to be there when she opens her eyes in the morning. She wants you to say what you mean and mean everything that you’re saying,” sang Hill in the opening of the tune.

McGraw jumped in: “She don’t give a damn ’bout your pride or the lies that you’re hiding behind. She just wants to feel that you’re real, that she’s near to the man that’s inside. She don’t need to hear she’s a queen on a throne, that she’s more than amazing. She just wants you to say what you mean and to mean everything that you’re saying.”

The song — about respecting a woman’s life — had a chorus that reads: “’Cause that’s how you talk to a woman, that’s how you speak to a girl. That’s how you get with a lady who’s worth more than anything in your whole world. You better respect your Mama, respect the hell out of her. ‘Cause that’s how you talk to a woman, that’s how you speak to a girl.”

The song pushed a positive message that came not just from the song itself, but from the stage presence of McGraw and Hill. The two have been married for almost 21 years — and at an awards show that celebrated music, art and creativity, it was inspiring to see a loving marriage on display as well.

The two have three daughters and have performed many songs together over the years, including “It’s Your Love” and “Like We Never Loved At All.”

Asked by Taste of Country last year about the secrets of a successful and happy marriage, McGraw responded that the key to any relationship is to simply listen.

He added, “I’ve also learned that when you look at politics and you look at the world we live in and everything else, there’s really no definite answers to anything. There’s a lot of sort of figuring your way out with every move that you make. I think that you find that out as you get older and that really has to do with relationships, as well.”

The country singer lightheartedly added that living with his wife and three daughters means he doesn’t “really have a lot of say-so at my house.”
