Say what you will about Madonna. The erstwhile Material Girl was able to keep us off guard for more than two decades with her wardrobe changes, media appearances and titillating stunts.

It’s a feat Miley Cyrus already appears to be fumbling in record time.

Cyrus made the transition from tween star to adult provocateur with her infamous 2013 appearance at the Video Music Awards broadcast on MTV. She twerked, and twerked some more, and suddenly the sweet star of Disney’s “Hannah Montana” was no more.

What Cyrus doesn’t realize is that our culture is far more desensitized than it was when Madonna’s career began.

Since then, she’s gotten nude or worse (trust us) on stages and social media alike, pushing her sexuality for all to see. She also has let everyone on Planet Earth know she likes to smoke pot.

So what’s next for Cyrus? She’s planning to perform live au naturel in the coming weeks. Oh, and she just posted an Instagram picture of her smoking a bong.

Yawn.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne shared the news about the all-nude concert last week via an Instagram post. The event is Cyrus’ way of promoting “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,” her newest album. The concert, which Cyrus has yet to officially confirm, would be filmed for a video version of Cyrus’ song “The Milky Milky Way.” Cyrus is scheduled to tour with The Flaming Lips.

As for Cyrus’ other obsession …

Over the weekend, Cyrus tried to rally support for Hilarity for Charity, a group that uses humor to raise money for Alzheimer’s disease research. She performed several songs for the group’s annual event that doubled as a bar mitzvah for actor James Franco. She also shared a picture of herself smoking a bong on Instagram to spread the news of the gig.

What Cyrus doesn’t realize is that our culture is far more desensitized to shock than it was when Madonna’s career began. We’ve seen it all, sadly, and to catch us off guard now takes some serious heavy lifting.

It doesn’t help that a wave of Madonna wannabes has been trying to grab our attention for some time now. Consider all the wacky stunts attempted by Lady Gaga, a genuinely gifted musician who too often dons silly attire to bemuse us. She garnered the most attention in recent months by singing a beautiful tribute to Julie Andrews at the Academy Awards telecast earlier this year.

It turns out the best way to turn our collective heads is to flat-out dazzle us with your talent. Think Taylor Swift. Cyrus can sing … and dance … and she’s been a performer for what seems like ages despite her youth. She’s 22.

She’s also hopelessly naive to think her shock shtick will keep her atop for much longer.
