When you hire Miley Cyrus, you get Miley Cyrus.

MTV may have set up a live broadcast delay to prepare for the singer’s “anything goes” shtick Sunday night at the Video Music Awards, but it clearly wanted what it got. Too much skin, repeated shout-outs to pot, profanity galore and revealing outfits.

Cyrus even pretended to perform oral sex on a cob of corn in a prepared video shown early in the night.

What MTV didn’t get is anything funny from the young singer, who shredded her teen image back at the 2013 VMAs with a twerk-filled performance. Cyrus dropped a series of jokes throughout the night, showing neither comic timing nor an ability to ad lib gags during a live event.

Instead, she relied on her stock in trade. She changed from one garish, flesh-revealing outfit to the next. Her commentary had to be beeped routinely. She out-did Willie Nelson when it came to promoting pot use, including her live performance of the new pro-pot track “Doo It!” which, according to Billboard.com, features 35 “f-bombs.”

And, before the night was over, she had a wardrobe malfunction that was likely staged weeks in advance.

Her most appropriate line came when she name-dropped current GOP presidential favorite Donald Trump. The winner of the night’s Video Vanguard Award, Kanye West, ended his rambling acceptance speech by saying — joking? — he was planning a run for the White House.

“Trump, you had my vote. Now, Kanye West for president,” Cyrus cried, perhaps hoping to be the rapper’s running mate.
