4.) “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992). One of Day-Lewis’ more popular pictures over the years has been “The Last of the Mohicans,” from director Michael Mann.

Day-Lewis portrayed Hawkeye in one of his most charismatic and commanding performances. In the midst of the French and Indian War, Hawkeye — adopted by the Mohican tribe — is caught in the middle of the conflict and falls in love with the daughter of a British officer (Madeleine Stowe).

“Mohicans” was one of Day-Lewis’ most accessible films and most entertaining pictures. He was a more typical leading man here, and he pulled it off with the same mastery he’s brought to every other performance over the course of his career.
