1.) “There Will Be Blood” (2007). “I drink your milkshake!” Day-Lewis screamed in one of the final scenes of writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic about oil drilling in the early years of the 20th century.

The line was delivered with such fierceness and believable hostility that it entered the lexicon of trendy sayings for a moment. T-shirts were printed and the low-budget movie got some extra press, which arguably helped lead to its impressive box office haul of $40.2 million against a production budget of $25 million.

Day-Lewis walked away with an Oscar for his work as the ruthless oilman, and it was well deserved. It’s a cliche to say someone like Day-Lewis disappeared into his role, but he did. He created one of the most memorable, believable, and unique characters in the last 20 years of film.

“Blood” has only gotten better with age, earning additional praise from critics and film academics. Anderson’s direction and screenplay were sharp, but it was Day-Lewis’ embrace of an ambitious, manipulative, and somehow still likable and charismatic protagonist that brought this project together. (go to page 3 to continue reading)[lz_pagination]
